Basilica of San Clemente
Our exploration of San Clemente will unveil a fascinating tapestry of history and legend: we will learn a history spanning two thousand years in about two hours, just steps away from the Colosseum.
The current basilica was built in the 12th century and is worth a visit on its own, being full of masterpieces (such as the apsidal chapel and a fresco cycle by Masolino and Masaccio). However, the basilica holds numerous other secrets beneath its current level.
When descending the stairs of the right nave, we will find soon realize that we are inside another church, built in the 4th century. As we navigate the maze of underground tunnels uncovered during archaeological excavations, we will learn the story of a consul who became a martyr under Emperor Domitian and we will also learn about his servant, who became pope, but was exiled to Crimea, and became a martyr.
We’ll learn the legend of St. Clement’s tomb, discovered by Saints Cyril and Methodius. Cyril is often credited with inventing the Cyrillic alphabet. Cyril brought what he believed to be St. Clement’s relics to Rome, where they now rest in the Basilica of San Clemente.
Our journey will also reveal:
- A medieval fresco featuring one of the earliest known inscriptions in vernacular Italian, known as “the Legend of Sisinnius”.
- Byzantine-style frescoes that offer a window into the artistic traditions of the Eastern Roman Empire.
- A beautiful Mithraeum, showcasing the presence of this mystery cult in ancient Rome.
- Remnants of Roman buildings that fell victim to Nero’s Great Fire of 64 CE, providing tangible evidence of this historic catastrophe.
As we explore these historical treasures, our experience will be enhanced by the gradual emergence of an auditory backdrop. The faint sound of an underground river, flowing more than 10 meters beneath our feet, will become increasingly apparent, adding a sense of depth and mystery to our underground journey.
