St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Grottoes

Basilica d San Pietro

The Basilica was built during the reign of Constantine in the spot where, according to the tradition, once the tomb of St. Peter was. The church was completely renovated in the fifteenth century, with the construction of the largest basilica in the world, for which they worked artists such as Michelangelo, Bernini, Bramante, Maderno and many others.

Once inside the basilica, we remain speechless, admiring its magnificence and the masterpieces kept in it. Just to name a few of them: the Pietà by Michelangelo, the bronze statue of St. Peter's, Bernini's canopy, the chair of St. Peter. The tour will continue with the discovery of the tombs of the popes, placed in the Holy Vatican Grottoes, that also contain many other ancient monuments: tombstones, the remains of sculptures, mosaics and frescoes.

When we leave the church, we will conclude our tour in St. Peter's Square with the obelisk of Caligula and the colonnade, another invention of the baroque genius of Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
